Tempest: Tempest, whose actual name means violent storm, is the main character, a black man at the age of thirty-four, with fourteen children by different women. He is convicted of being a sinner in the eyes of St. Peter who is the spokes person and judge for God. Tempest after his death is given another chance. He came back to earth as a different person in the physical, but the same in the spirit and mind. He is supposed to prove to the angel that in spite of his sin, he is not damned to hell. That his journey expresses the struggle of life and sin.
Angel: Second main Character, sent to make Tempest admit his sin or guilt. Through his walk with Tempest, he realizes the struggles of mankind.
Devil: This character represents the ultimate temptation. The devil offers Tempest all of his desires in exchange for his soul. He wants to rule and he comes into Tempest journey in order to convince him to join his allegiance.
Brawny: She represents temptation for Angel. In Tempest first life, he rescued Brawny from death and in return she testifies to Tempest innocents. Angel ends up falling in love with her, and actually loses his holiness choosing to live the life of a man.
Deductive Argument
• If you commit sins your guilty
• Tempest committed sins
• Therefore Tempest is guilty
Inductive Argument
• Tempest is sent back to earth to prove his innocence
• During his time on earth he proves all men are vulnerable to mistakes
• Therefore Tempest is innocent
Deductive
• All men who fall in love are exposed to jealousy
• Angel falls in love
• Therefore Angels is exposed to jealousy

Tempest tales characters
St. Peter: St. Peter decides who enters heaven’s gates. He orders Tempest Landry to go to Hell. Tempest refuses to go to Hell because St.Peter cannot prove to Tempest that he did wrong. St. Peter sends Tempest and Angel to earth to prove to Tempest that he is a sinner.
Tempest Landry: Tempest is an African American male who has struggled his entire life to survive. In his first life he is murdered by a New York City police officer. He is sent back to Earth because he refuses St. Peters damnation. Tempest believes that the decisions that he has made in life have been necessary for his survival, and that the struggles that he has endured is a direct result of being a black man. Tempest believes that he is a product of his environment, and that he should not be held accountable for the mistakes that he has made because he was thrown into unfair circumstances from the day that he was born. Tempest is perceived as deceitful by Angel especially when he sides with Beelzebub. Tempest shows Angel time and time again that he (Tempest) does what he does to survive. Tempest argues that at face value his actions could be considered sins, but when examined more closely they provide evidence that they were done with good intentions, and were not sins at all. An example of this negation of sin occurs when Tempest steals someones insurance card to help Branwyn when her spleen is ruptured. The theft of the insurance card is a sin, but because it is done to help someone who desparately needs help, it negates the sin and actually becomes virtuous. This sinful yet virtuous act is akin to the story of Robin Hood, in which he steals from the rich to give to the poor. Tempest has a good heart and does his best with the very little that he has in life.
Joshua Angel: Angel has good intentions but is very naïve. He passes judgement onto a human without knowing what it is like to be a human. His job is to make Tempest admit that he is a sinner. He knows nothing of the struggles that Tempest faces from day to day. While on Earth, Angel learns how to love. Angel also has his moments of sinning while in human form. Angel believes that a sin is a sin and that good intentions do not negate the sin.
Branwyn: A seemingly young African America woman who is rescued by Tempest. She ultimately falls in love with Angel and births his child.
Beelzebub/Satan-AKA Bob: Tempest befriends Beelzebub. Beelzebub becomes Tempest’s lawyer of sorts. Bob takes care of Tempest, and gives him a lavish place to stay with the intention of acquiring Tempest’s soul. Tempest basically uses Bob to once again prove to Angel that he does what he does as a means of survival. This angers Bob. Bob torments Tempest for a few months. Tempest and Satan ultimately make an agreement that they will leave each other alone.
Deductive argument
Tempest has committed sins.
Sinners go to hell.
∴ Therefore, Tempest should go to hell.
Inductive argument
Tempest stabbed Quentin Sams.
Tempest steals the contribution box from a church.
Tempest steals an insurance card.
Tempest has several lovers at once.
Tempest associates with the devil.
∴ Therefore, Tempest should go to hell.
Deductive argument
Doing good things for others is virtuous.
Tempest sometimes has to steal to help others when they are in need.
∴Tempest is virtuous.
