Presentations today Cyber-Rsponse
Presentations today were great! Don't forget to post the your arguments with your comments. Reflect on the process: what went well, what you learned and if anything what you might do differently next time.
Lastly, comment on a classmate's argument: what did you like about it? What did you learn?
Please bring your cartoons and ads tomorrow. I'd like to take a picture of the images to post at the assignment link. thanks!

My Febreeze ad's argument is that consumers should choose febreeze because it's freshness works to fool even your grandma.
ReplyDeleteMy cartoon's argument is that because more people care about who their next American Idol is than they do about their next President or Congressmen, creating one ballot for all of these will increase voter turnout.
This exercise showed me the many hidden assumptions behind Ads and cartoons that people take in without notice or caution that these assumptions may be fallacies.
I liked my classmate's argument on the "Hands off my buns" Ad. I like how effective visual arguments are in conveying a point (more so than written arguments) because of the hidden assumptions that can easily be used. For example, the assumption that women's bodies are used without respect in the media today is easily shown by adding a few bunnies next to the model.
For one of my ad it was arguing that Gillette razors are so gentle and safe that babies could use it.
ReplyDeleteFor my cartoon it argued that more people vote for American Idol than the president or congress. Therefore American Idol should be placed on the ballot.
This assignment showed me how advertising can be very deceiving such as the Reebox shoes. It implies that people will get a better rear end and legs but that may not necessarily be true. Also those shoes have really bad arch support and that is definitely not mentioned in the ad.
I really liked the ad about how it takes 90 years to create a kleenex. It's pretty much true I believe that is near the average age of a redwood tree. It really makes you wonder if using a kleenex is worth it. When you actually think about it, it takes less time to use kleenex then grow a tree and because of this all our resources are being used up too fast for the our resources to regenerate. This ad was non-profit so it was made just to inform the public and promote sustainability.
The Belvedere ad that I brought in to share with the class had an argument of girls that drink and "believe" in Belvedere will attract cute guys.
ReplyDeleteOne of my peers brought in a carton showing a woman at the poll station voting for an "American Idol." The argument was that not a lot of people go out and vote during U.S. elections however, they are quick to vote for the next "American Idol." If "American Idol" was added to the ballot more people would probably come out and vote.
I liked that cartoon because it is actually kind of funny and but it may also be true.
The presentations went well and I liked what everyone shared with the class. There are a lot of subliminal messages in Ad's and cartoons that are overlooked and not talked about.
For the ad that I presented, it follows:
ReplyDeletePremise 1: The lady is wearing Reebok Easytone.
Premise 2: Reebok Easytone firms both butt and legs.
Argument: The lady has both a firm butt and legs because she is wearing Reebok Easytone.
For the cartoon that I brought, it follows:
Premise 1: The U.S. Military is secretly torturing Muslims.
Premise 2: Exploitation of torturing Muslims gives a bad image.
Premise 3: Newsweek is giving America a bad image.
Argument: Newsweek is exploiting the U.S. Military for torturing Muslims.
All of the presentations went well. The context of all the ads and cartoons that were presented today were enlightening. I learned that ads and cartoons surrounding us include arguments that supports or goes against subject matters. I might present better in terms of projecting to the audience next time.
My two favorite arguments brought in by a classmate would be the one where it informs us that it takes 90 years to make a Kleenex, as well as the “Hands off the buns.” These two arguments stemmed from nonprofit organizations that are fighting for very important causes such as animals and environmental issues. The latter’s ambiguity forces the reader to scrutinize the ad further. The former is quite shocking.
My advertisement is the tobacco ad released by Marlboro in 1970’s. In 1970, the restriction of advertising tobacco was growing. A lot of tobacco companies competed with each other. In this era, each tobacco company tried to make efforts to glorify smoking cigarette. For example, Marlboro picked up a handsome model in this advertisement, which makes people think that smoking a cigarette is necessary for the men who want to be handsome. As you know, catchphrase is the weapon to differentiate their product from competitors. In this ad above, the catchphrase they used makes people think that Marlboro is the real flavor of cigarette. By using this catch phrase, Marlboro makes their products better than their competitors. Although I couldn’t find the Korean version of Marlboro advertisement, there was a provocative catchphrase in the advertisement. This is that Man Always Remember Love Because Of Romance Over. This catchphrase was issued between Korean male customer, and Marlboro was successful selling their products. In conclusion, Marlboro’s advertisement standardized the men to smoke. Marlboro showed why men should buy their products using a gentle image of model. They were also successful to differentiate their product from competitors through the catchphrase.
ReplyDeleteIn conclusion, all tobacco customers are being brainwashed by the advertisement like Marlboro's
my cartoon was a guy with a gun speak out on his rights to own guns and in each scene he is holding more and more guns.
ReplyDeletePremise1. Guns are highly dangerous weapons which are a large issue when it comes to who can own one.
Premise2. the government is putting bans on who can own guns and when they can use them.
the cartoon implies that the more banns the government puts on guns the more people will buy one or more guns because they may not be able to in the future.
I liked the cartoon presented in class that showed the military general saying that Newsweek is giving the us a bad image while his officers are dragging a body from the torture chamber.this cartoon stuck out to me because if the government weren't torturing war prisoners then the us wouldn't look bad.
