English 5/211 develops the ability to analyze, criticize, and advocate ideas. Critical thinking looks at the relationship between language and logic, introduces rhetoric or persuasive writing and tools students can use to evaluate information based on facts, perceptions, assumptions, evidence, reasons, inferences, judgments, induction, deduction and conclusions.
I think the syllabus is pretty straight foward, and is what I would expect from a class like this.
ReplyDeleteThe first thought I had when we first read the syllabus was “this looks like a lot of work”. Once I re-read it more carefully, I realized that it was more than I first anticipated. Regardless, I like a challenge. The syllabus itself is pretty long, but I like how it goes into detail and leaves us without many questions at the end. It is clear and left me with a good idea of what to expect for the next six weeks.-Rocio
ReplyDeleteMy first thought when I read the syllabus was that we would be reading constantly this summer. As long as the books are interesting and they bring up valid points that can be dissected and written about then I'm all for it.
ReplyDeleteDespite its length and detail, I found the syllabus confusing and, judging by the clarifications in class, incomplete. On the first page of the syllabus, the course promises to devote more time to ideas and less to "grammar and mechanics". As I go through it though, a number of requirements seem to contradict that as they are the very definition of process: portfolios, reading logs, peer reviews, drafts, group projects (hate 'em!), blogging, vocabulary logs. Process is great for those who need/want process. My fervent hope is that "process" does not become the focus of this course.
ReplyDeleteThe syllabus is good but at first it seems like there is a lot of work and it is all due too quickly but as i read it over a few more times i started to understand how the class is setup and how the books are organized and the work seem less intimidating.

ReplyDeleteThe syllabus I must say is pretty clear and precise except there's a little confusion for me about when and what exactly is due. For instance I wasn't sure if our post to this Blog was suppose to be done yesterday or today. All in all I'm quite excited to take this writing class although I'm a little nervous about the intensity of the workload. I did really well in First Year Reading and Composition class at Humboldt State University but I still felt need for assistance with perfecting/improving my writing, hence forth my decision to sign up for this class.
ReplyDeleteAll informations of the syllabus are very helpful to get the grade I want to get from this course. This syllabus is well organized. Although this syllabus consists of so many words or information, it is very useful for me. After I read this syllabus, I thought that this course would be tougher than I expected. I’ll try to do my best, because I should get a passing grade.
