Day 4 Recap and Cyber-post

Today in class we watched a video on Argumentation (The Write Course). We reviewed Chapter 2 and looked ahead to Chapter 4 and practiced identifying arguments and then structuring them in standard form. Students worked in groups.

Many students never purchased or checked the Wise book out of the library (public library). Everyone has to write the Wise essay. Of the other essays, I am going to make one of them optional. Keep track of the types of essays written. There are three types--one per essay.

Post your summary of the video here. The summary should be about 5-10 sentences long. Don't forget to include a works cited page or section.

  1. The video is an informative one that introduces the concept of argumentation. It features four characters wherein one of them was seeking help from the other three to convince his company to buy him a new van. The other three suggests creating argumentation as a way to convince the company. The other three teaches him a step by step process of argumentation that starts in analyzing the audience. The audience includes those who agree, who doesn't and those who cant decide. The next step is creating premises which includes one or two opposing view points. To even persuade the company, the three characters suggest presenting evidences that supports his argument as well. Finally, they ended in a conclusion that fixing up the old van would be as expensive as buying a new van.

  2. What is an argument? How does the team use Fred's van trouble to illustrate how to write an argument?

  3. In the movie we watched on Thursday three characters in an office offer to help a fourth character (Fred) who is having car trouble with the company van. Fred has tried twice to convince their company to buy a new van but has failed. The three characters devise a plan to create an argumentation to convince the bosses to buy a new van. They first start out by finding facts or premises to defend their argument, such as the van regularly fails to start and has issues with multiple parts throughout it. Second they go on to explain how the opposition is wrong. Some of the bosses say that the van can be easily repaired for less money than a new van would cost. The group of people in the office add the total estimated cost of repairing the van is equal to the cost of a new van. They use tools such as syllogism and and legitimate evidence from an expert to persuade their audience. Finally they find flaws within the basis of the oppositions argument. They state that even if the van were to be repaired the number of issues with it along with its age would cause it break down again and the company would pay twice as much. In the end Fred is confident to present his claim to the bosses because of the lesson he was given in argumentation.

  4. The video on argumentation that we watched was informational as well as not bland. It starts out with one of the characters having trouble writing a script or plan for an argumentation course. He wanted to focus on the jargon and terminology, but his co-workers got him to watch a video to help him see that that wasn't necessary. Then comes in another character who has trouble with his company's van. He needs a new one, but his request always gets shut down, so the other characters decide to use his case as a learning experience on how to argue. More video watching, jargon explaining and discussions later, he had a good argument to present to is argument. The process that led to this included analyzing the audience, the counter argument and creating premises that weren't filled with fallacies.

  5. The movie that we watched was educative and creative. It informed us about the importance of making a point and supporting with evidence for a good argumentation. According to the video, there are three forms of argumentation: one involved taking a stance in which include the process of mustering evidence to support and strengthen the stance chosen; the other include taking the oppositions’ evidence and telling why it’s wrong; and finally, finding fallacies of the opposition, refuting it, and tearing it apart. The movie incorporated the audiences in argumentation and they composed of those who agree with you, those who don’t agree with you, and those that are neutral. The informative characteristic of the video illuminated us with the definition of syllogism as a deductive form of reasoning which specifically is reasoning that is going from general to specific. The movie was creative because in trying to convey the importance and process of argumentation, the 3 office characters, who knew a great deal about argumentation, used Fred, a worker, and his dilemma comprising the argument of his dire need for a new van. Furthermore, the speakers in the video stated in one way or another how anticipation and preparation are the keys to success in argumentation. It is of importance as well to make sure the expert being quoted is really an expert. Evidence is also very important, because evidence is factual and the use of it can strengthen the argument.

  6. The movie we watched explores the different ways an argument can be improved. An argument is a debate in which one party tries to sell a position on an issue. Methods and aspects of argumentation are given using the main problem illustrated in the movie, Fred's need for a new van. The team critiques Fred's appeal for a new van by suggesting that he needs to know his audience, back his claims and opinions up with solid facts and anticipate other solutions the audience may think of and prove in his argument that only his solution (getting a new van) will work.
