Cyber-Assignment

Library Orientation today 11 a.m. to 12:15 with Professor Jane McKenna. See you in the L-building, first floor. I sent students an email last night. If you didn't get it, make sure you have registered with Admissions and Records.

Respond to the library orientation in a short essay (250 words is fine). Be specific in your references. Use examples.

Homework from WLTC due today is due Thursday, March 1. Some students are printing out their assignments, WLTC and blog assignments for feedback. This is fine. I read a book review summary response today.

We meet in A-232 on Thursday.

    Cyber Assignment:
    Library Orientation Response

Today in the library, we as a class had the opportunity to be introduced the college’s database system by Professor Jane McKenna. She was kind enough to explain the features and locations of how to navigate through the book catalog and article databases. I was surprised and impressed to see how in-depth our database system is and how a wide range of databases are available. I also like how the book catalog is integrated within the whole Peralta school district that makes it possible to see if books related to our topic can be picked up at the other Peralta colleges.
The CQ researcher database actually caught my attention with how simple and easy it is to search for related topics to the paper we are going to write. The search results on this database can be broken down in a different number of ways to narrow down or even expand the search. I believe that this database will be most helpful for what I will be trying to search for in my essay.

    Library Orientation Reflection

I found the library orientation presented by Professor Jane McKenna to be a lot more informational than I had expected. One of the most helpful things I learned was how to use the Peralta school district's database. This is extremely helpful because the information in this database is only available to students in the Peralta school district. Anyone else would normally have to subscribe to a magazine or pay money to see the complete articles, but the library database provides them to students for free. I think that's really awesome.
Another part of the database that I think is going to be really helpful to me is the Library Handouts section, which offers reference tools for writing. Among these is an MLA formatting document, which will come in very handy when I am citing my sources in papers for this class.
Lastly, the CQ researcher is by far the most useful part of the Library Database, as it helps narrow down the huge database of articles available. Also, it will be helpful once we start writing the argumentative essays for this class because it provides pro/con arguments by professionals on just about every subject, along with the information used to back up those arguments.
All in all, I'm glad I went to this orientation and actually paid attention, because I learned a lot.

    Library Review
The library review was extremely informative. I enjoyed learning about the access available to students on different magazine articles. Articles that require the average person to pay are available to college students for no charge. Its information right at our fingertips just waiting to be explored. I was also really amazed at the search available on the school’s library website. It makes for a faster and more detailed search, and it is very in depth. By using key words you can find all types of books that apply to a specific topic. The librarian also pointed out that you can actually take specific words from your search results, and plug them in again to get an even more detailed search result. There is a section that allows students to search for professional articles written by doctors and lawyers alike. Overall the orientation provided a lot of information that was unknown to me and was very helpful.
There is also a section in the library of books on reserve. These books include things like encyclopedias or collections of books. They are on reserve because they are reference books which the librarians use often; therefore they must stay in the library. There are textbooks on reserve as well which allow student’s access to required books that they may not be able to purchase. There is so much help and information available to help students succeed. I will defiantly be visiting the librarian to start my research paper.

The library orientation was very helpful. I am glad that I was able to attend it because it gave me the opportunity to get more familiar with the library and its resources. I had no idea that the library provided so many resources. The library database seems to be a great source to use for research on my essay assignments. I found it very helpful that the librarian based most of her information she provided us with off of the homework assignments we will soon be doing. I found it also very helpful that she demonstrated everything she talked about so the class could understand her better. I am sure that I will one of the students who will definitely take advantage of this awesome recourse.

    Library Response:

For class, we attended the library orientation to have a quick view on how to access the libraries data base. At first it seems to be a little confusing for me since I am new to College of Alameda. Once I started to follow along with the orientation lecture, I started to understand a few basic concepts of accessing the libraries data base. It is very interesting to see how students have access to many books that the Peralta School District offers. It is also interesting to see that the books that our district offers is spread out all across the 4 different campuses. I remember the instructor was showing us how to search up some of the criteria just by typing some words that matches our topic. Since our class topic is on juvenile delinquent or youth violence, the instructor did a search on the topic and as a class we found out that there are a number of options to choose from. One book that was very interesting was the encyclopedia about juvenile delinquents. I really do not remember exact what the title of the encyclopedia but it does have to do with our topic. After the lecture the instructor let us do a little research of our own. I find it very interesting that we have so many resources to make our papers supported with many evidence or resources from outside sources. One thing I dislike about the resources or information that we find on the web is some are priced. I really dislike it when I find great information and we have to pay to have full access to the information. The worst part is after I buy the resource or information and I read the article, it might not be exactly what I want it to be. I guess for now I would rather use the free resources that our school provides.

    Library Orientation Review

The Library Orientation was very helpful. It is great to know that the students have access to so many books and articles for free. Although, the orientation was confusing at first and I was having hard time following Ms. McKenna's instruction, it turned out to be fine. I really like how we even have access to journals and newsletters, which we would normally have to pay for. One thing that I am really excited about is the fact that we can also use all the tools from home just by logging into the library's website. It is very convenient that I don’t necessarily have to be at the library in order to access things that I need. I am really looking forward to using all the resources for our upcoming assignments and essays. Now that I don’t have to solely rely on Google, I hope that I can come up with better arguments and examples for my assignments and hence, get better grades.

    Library Orientation
The library orientation was really helpful because it was organized. I was able to hear the speaker all the way in the back. The different sections that were presented were as well in a lot of detail. The way she presented the different ways to research and find books helped with the visuals that she gave. The different sections were a good overview of what the library can provide when you are doing a research project. It seems that the library is really there to help you with its online catalog, and reference desks.
I was able to follow how she found a book and how to know if the book was here on our campus or at another campus. She also showed how there is a way to find out if the book is not in either campus but it is in a near library. I was able to follow which are the best sources and article data bases to go to in order to find articles regarding a certain topic. I was also able to see the different resources that are offered in the library, for example the librarians could help you with your research if you are not finding anything by helping you find better key words. The librarians also have an intense packet of ways to cite the different sources.
In conclusion, the library orientation was really helpful. Now I know that there are people that are there for me and I can clarify any questions I have or concerns when I am doing some research. I know that the articles are available for me whenever I need them just with the password. The articles are also available to be send by email. Overall, the entire library orientation was good even though it was time limited.

    Library Orientation

The library orientation was a great experience to have. It is wonderful to know since I attend more than one peralta school I dont have to travel to each library to just find out a book isnt there. I can simply go to the database and look through it to see if a book is located there and how many is there to access. Ms. McKenna's instructions seemed to be a bit confusing in the beginning but the more she talked the more it made sense. The fact that some things in any other library we must pay for we have access to is just incredible, being a college student my money isnt the way I would like it to be. so anything to save while learning is a blessing. I am really looking forward to using all the resources for our upcoming assignments and essays. Now not only relying on google i can surely have better essays to produce.

    Library Orientation

Today I had the pleasure of receiving a library orientation by Professor Jane McKenna. I enjoyed this library orientation because I found it very useful. Many of the times when I am writing a research paper, I do not find enough valuable resources in Google. Now I am sure that then I need to find articles on a certain topic, I will not have any problems finding any. The way that the professor gave her presentation was well organized and easy to follow. I also enjoyed that many of the articles that she pulled up in the screen matched the topic I will be writing for Yummy.

    Library Orientation

I have found the Library Orientation highly useful for several reasons. I have walked into the library confused and not knowing where to find books. I have learned today where to find them by reading the shelf number on the binding of the book. In adition, how to search articles for accurate information to add onto research papers. I have also learned where to go for any questions or concerns I may have about how the library works. I am very thankful for the information I learned today because i can now find books and articles without a single hassle.

I found the library orientation to be very informative and helpful. I always walked into the library and had no idea that we had an armory of academic tools at our disposal. Learning about the catalog has helped me find books and other Peralta libraries. I also know the difference between an academic source and a bad academic source. Google only scratches the surface with the information that we are searching while a academic source gets more in depth.
