P: but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.

P: Tyranny, like Hell is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.

P: What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as FREEDOM should not be highly rated.

C: Britain, with an army to enforce her tyranny, has declared that she has a right(not only to TAX) but “to BIND us in ALL CASES WHATSOEVER” and if being bound in that manner, is not slavery, then is there not such a thing as slavery upon earth. Even the expression is impious; for so unlimited a power can belong only to God.

    War Poem in Standard Form
The End of the Beginning by Wislawa Szmborska

War has its causes and effects. War causes damage someone is going to have to clean up.
“After every war someone has to clean up.”
This poem makes you think whether war is worth it. Did the people who declared war really think of the consequences or do they care?

    Speaking: The Hero

This poem is about a man who did not want to fight in a war and was forced to go. He was called a coward for not wanting to take part in it. After he died, the people made speeches about him and honored him for his deeds. This poem showed that there are two sides to a story. The soldier had not wanted to be part of the war and had tried to escape. His comrades labeled him a coward for not doing his duty, but after he died, they were telling his story as if he was a hero. He stated that he “died a coward. They called [him] a hero.” In death, this soldier was represented as a hero even though his comrades thought otherwise in the beginning.

    Premise 1:

“I did not want to go. They inducted me.”

    Premise 2:

“They said I gave my life. I had struggled to keep it.”

    Premise 3:

“They said I set an example. I had tried to run.”

    Conclusion:

“I died a coward. They called me a hero.”

The soldier felt he died a coward, but in death, was represented as a hero.

    Rain on a Battlefield
    by: Yehuda Amichai

Human beings are all the same, regardless of race, gender or age. We all feel the same, life the same and acts the same, and in the end, we all end up the dead.

The poem From America, America by Saadi Youssef, is a poem about America. It is telling the reader what it means to be an American. It also seems as if he is not an American himself and is telling us what he loves and how he sees America.

P1 – He sets as an example
P2 – He gave his life
Conclusion- If one sets an example and gives his/her life for the benefit of his/her country then he/she is a hero.

    Summary:
This poem is really interesting, it is about a man who was forced to join the Army, he did not want to at all, he did not want to die, he tried to run away, he cried in pain but when he died, they said he sets an example, that they are proud of him, that he is a hero. He went to war against his will, but he died being a hero for the good of his country.

    The Hero
    1. I did not want to go.
    They inducted me
    2. I did not shoot.
They said I had no guts.
    3. In saftey I died.
    They blew taps over me.
    4. They made a speech in my home town
I was unable to call them liars
    5. They said I set an example.
    I had tried to run
    6. I wanted to live
    They called me a coward

    Therefore
    I died a coward
    They called me a hero

In this piece the author expresses the use of propaganda to promote the agenda of the military machine even though it was not a true representation of the actual events that took place for this particular soldier.

The Dead Do Not Want Us Dead

A: The dead do not want us dead
A: Such petty errors are left for the living
A: No gift to them -- not rage, not weeping.

C: I believe this poem is a reference to suicidal thoughts and an effort to prevent it. They [the dead] do not want the living to join them; rather, they envy us. "Return one of them, any of them, to the earth, and look: such foolish skipping, such telling of bad jokes, such feasting!"

Rain on a Battlefield by Yehunda Amichai

    1. It rains on the faces of those who are protected
    2. It rains on those who died and have no protection
    C. Just like rain, war affects everyone it touches.

I thought this poem was short but powerful, it conveyed that rain touches everyone and is something that is powerful, war is also something powerful and like rain it can affect everyone it involves, but it includes death. The images of rain, death and war are what come to mind when reading this poem and they are all images that create a powerful and gloomy mood. The message to me is the affect of war and how no one is really "covered" or protected from war.

    Rain on a Battlefield
    by Yehunda Amichai

I enjoyed this poem because it was short and power. Without a lot of words that author gives a distinct narrative that evokes emotion from the reader. I read again and again and each time a felt a sense of humanity and sense of hopeless and weakness. It puts humans in perspective to the elements and the power of matter.

    1. War hurts those who are fighting the battle.
    2. War affects those at home watching the battle.
    C. Just like rain, war affects everyone it touches.

    Speak out

The given poem “Speak out,” written by Lawrence Ferlinghetti, is a critic about the situation that Americans do not speak out against the war in the Middle East. The author says that this is a war, which is created out of fear. He does not understand why people do not question the war especially since the US has and had to sacrifice so many lives of young men.

This poem is not just a critic against the US governmental decision’s but moreover a call for action. The author makes clear that it is important to speak out if we do not want to sacrifice more innocent lives in a war.

The poem seems to be written just a few years ago since it refers to the US war with Afghanistan or Iraq. The author points out that this is a war the US should not be fighting anymore, due to the loss of soldiers and innocent people. The current war could get closer to an end if the public would starts taking a voice and “speak out” against it. Personally, I support the author’s opinion. The war the US is fighting is based on lies about WMD and a fear. Soldier and civilians die on a daily basis and the question is: for what reason? But if the government will not find any support in their country anymore, then the US government might consider taking more and more troops out of the Middle East.

    Standard form:

Premise 1: a vast paranoia sweeps through the country

Premise 2: the US is shipping young men to war

Premise 3: no one speaks out against the war

Therefore, you might be the next one fighting the war
