    Exercise 2F

An inference I can make is that world class sprinter Usain Bolt is good at soccer. I can support this inference because a sport like soccer requires the athlete to be extremely quick on their feet. Sprinters have a physique that is well suited to be very fast. Furthermore, they train professionally their whole lives to obtain perfect running form and push themselves to be even faster. The same speed can translate over to soccer. Because soccer is heavily dependent on running, a quick player will be able to get to the ball faster, break away from defenders, and have explosive change of pace that can catch the other team off guard. Learning the technicalities of soccer like proper footwork, passing, etc. will also be much easier to an athlete that had to footwork associated with sprinting. These skills are interrelated and will make a sprinter like Usain Bolt much more adjusted to soccer than a person whose profession is a computer programmer or doctor.

    Exercise 2H

    1. In the article, the reasons for the publication of pictures of dead and injured soldiers are shown through the opinions of journalists, historians, and military figures. Gail Buckland is an author and professor and she claims that photographs are monuments to the soldiers. Joao Silva took pictures of Juan Valdez-Castillo as he was injured. The Marines asked for copies to support a recommendation for Jesse Leach, his savior, to receive a medal. Meaghan, the Times picture editor, supports the publication of photographs and feels it provides a truthful account of the consequences of war. Tom Langseth, a retired Army lieutenant colonel, thanked The Times and believes it shows how everyone worked to save his grandson Tommy. Keller believes the photographs are an account of every aspect of the war, and to leave them out of the account would be a disservice.

Most of the people who oppose the photographs are the people from the Army and some of the soldiers' families. Leija's family were upset about the coverage of their son's deaths, as were the military, which decided to cut off all correspondents from The Times. Lt. Gen. Raymond Odierno claimed that pictures taken requires the soldier's written permission. Jim Looram, a Vietnam vet, believes that images of dead soldiers should never be published during the war because it cannot convey what the soldiers went through and thus dishonors them.

The writer of the article, Clark Hoyt, supports the position of publishing the pictures. The examples he provides all tend to support his position and even when he provides examples that support the opposite side, he will provide a counter example. In the case of Jim Looran who felt pictures shouldn't be published, he gave a follow up example with his daughter Meaghan, who felt that pictures are meant to provide a truthful representation of war and are not meant to disrespect soldiers in anyway.

    2. After seeing the pictures posted online, I felt that they deserve to be online. I agree with Buckland when he said that photos are monuments and honors the soldiers because it will remember their contributions and sacrifices to the war. I don't understand how showing soldiers in combat is a form of dishonor. If anything, it shows their bravery and their sacrifice since they are putting their bodies in the line of fire so that we don't have to. I can understand why the Army or the Marines will oppose it because it obviously will create anti-war sentiment back home. However, Americans deserve to know the costs of what they're fighting for.

    Exercise 2F

An inference is an conclusion reached by reasoning from several facts and information. A recent inference I have made is that the Filipino boxer, Manny Pacquiao is the greatest boxer of all time because other boxing legends proved their greatness by beating fighters in the same weight level or same division, Pacquiao fights against great champions who are supposedly better than him because they are heavier and had more experience. Last year, Pacquiao won his eight title in eight different divisions against Antonio Margarito, a Mexican- American boxer. Pacquiao left his opponent awfully injured. Some of the famous boxers that Pacquiao have fought before and won over them were Erik Morales (Mexico), Oscar Larios (Mexico), Hector Velasquez (Mexico), Jorge Solis (Mexico), Marco Antonio Barrera (Mexico), Juan Manuel Marquez (Mexico), David Diaz (U.S.A), Oscar De La Hoya (U.S.A), Ricky Hatton (U.K), Miguel Angel Cotto (Puerto Rico), Joshua Clottey (Ghanna). This upcoming May 7, 2011, Pacquiao is fighting against Shane Mosley of U.S.A at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas for another world title belt.

A great boxer is said to have both his heart and spirit for the sport, he must have the physical/athletic ability in order to perform good inside the ring. A lot of experience, since it said to be the best way to learn, it would be good to know how different boxers moves and techniques. He must also have the Boxing IQ, so he would not get lost during the fight., he has to know what to do when it is just him and the opponent in the ring, he has to know what punch to throw and when to throw it, when to attack and when to defend. Another important factor is the Mental Toughness, the wanting to win, despite of being knocked down, he should still come back and continue the fight. Manny Pacquiao has it all, so his next fight should be good, against a veteran boxer, Shane Mosley.

    Exercise 2H

1.) According to this article, journalists, historians and military figures are the ones who approve about the publication of pictures of dead and injured soldiers and their main reasons are because the photographs are monuments to the soldiers, they show how great of soldiers they were and how brave they were to risk their lives for this country. Joao Silva, a photographer who took pictures of Juan Valdez-Castillo when he was injured. Marines asked for copies to support a recommendation for Jesse Leach, his savior to receive a medal for doing such thing. Meaghan, Times’ picture editor, approves the publication of pictures because it gives a truthful images of what is really going on there, it shows the cost of having one.

The people who usually disapprove with the publication of the photographs of dead and injured soldiers are the people from the Army and the soldiers’ families. Leija, a soldier who had been shot in the head and the next morning died, his family was upset with the pictures that came up in relate to Leija’s death. Jim Looram, a Vietnamese veteran, believes that images of dead soldiers should never be published to people during the war because it cannot pass on what the soldiers really had to go through .The Times was banned from embedding with the military but after lengthy discussions, the ban was lifted.

Clark Hoyt, the writer of this article supports the position of publishing photographs of dead and injured soldiers because every time he gives examples that provide his position, he tends to back it up more, make it a stronger and persuasive statement, also, it makes it obvious that he’s on a certain side of the argument. On the other hand, when he gives examples that is against his position/belief/opinion, he gives a counter example so that the readers will think its not the right thing to do/believe in.

2.) After reading the article and seeing the pictures online, I am pretty certain that I am on the publication of photographs of dead and injured soldiers side. The people outside the war need to know what is really going on, so that people will know the possible consequences of joining the Army etc. Also, we have the 1st Amendment, which includes freedom of the press, so basically it is written that press people are allowed to say/expose the things they see that they think people should know. I also believe that through pictures, future generations will see and realize how those brave soldiers gave their lives in order to have peace in this world, how they took the risk of getting hurt just for us. I see pictures like that as reminders of how we have great people in this country, the ones who don’t just think about good for themselves but also for others. Through pictures, we will always remember their sacrifices and contributions to the war.

By analyzing the facts I concluded that it would be wise to use my phone as an mp3 player instead of my ipod. I came to this conclusion because my ipod headphone jack continued on breaking. I only needed a microsd card for my phone to have enough memory to store all of my music on it. The microsd card and ipod headphone jack were both fifteen dollars. So I bought a microsd card instead of buying another headphone jack for my ipod.

The reasons for publication for pictures of gravely wounded or dead are to illustrate the truth of the brutality of war. The publications of such photos can be upsetting to the families of the victims and other civilians. The writer Clark Hoyt wrote as though he was on the right to publish the pictures, however he kept his opinion discrete throughout the article.

I feel that it is the right of the American people to view these images because its us that are involved in this war. Knowing the truth of what we as a society are involved in is very important. They shouldn't keep this information from us simply because it's disturbing. That would eventually result in the American people receiving absolutely no news that is considered disturbing.

    Exercise 2i
The Paul Mitchell ad the visual elements outweighs the text. However the message in the text is the underlying theme. The image shows a peaceful family enjoying a relaxing lounge in some tall grass. I think that the peaceful image creates a sense of serenity for the viewer then the viewer reads the caption. In the sense of serenity created by the ad the viewer tends to unconsciously agree with the overall message given to him.

    Exercise 2F

An inference is when a person makes a conclusion based on what they know. A recent inference I made had to do with watching movies while it is showing in theaters or waiting for it to come out on DVD to buy. I realize that there are appeals to both ways of watching movies. However, I concluded for myself that I would rather wait for the movie to come out on DVD to rent or buy because there are more advantages to that. By renting or buying a DVD a few months after it comes out in theaters, I might save money in the long run. With a DVD, I can keep the movie and watch it as many times as I want. I would not have to compete with other people for good seats in a theater. I would not have to worry about other people interrupting me. I can also pause the movie at home and return to it later.

I do see the appeal of watching a movie in a theater. I feel that many people want to see movies on a large screen because it would be more exciting to watch an action adventure or a thriller in 3D. For me, I would prefer watching movies in the privacy of my own home since it is more convenient and in the long run, cheaper.

    Exercise 2H

    1. According to the article “The Painful Images of War,” the reasons for the publication of pictures of the dead and injured soldiers are that photographs are monuments. They record a part of history that allows generations after to remember the heroic deeds of fallen soldiers. These photos help honor people who died fighting for a cause they believed in. They also honor the soldiers who fought to save their comrades in the midst of battle and chaos. The pictures provide an accurate account of what happened during the war. They also allow the families of soldiers to know exactly what happened to their relatives and may be comforted by the images of other soldiers doing what they can to save their comrades.

The reasons against the publication of fallen soldiers during the war are that some people believe it dishonors the soldiers. Some believe that civilians could never understand what happens in the middle of war. Photos could do no justice to the experiences soldiers go through during battle. The publication of photos taken of fallen soldiers would drag the family through more pain and frustration.

The writer of the article, Clark Hoyt, believes that the pictures of fallen soldiers ought to be published for people to see. He writes that the military and the families of some soldiers would prefer not to have pictures of loved ones published. However, he points out that photographs documents history even though it might be controversial. He also mentions that some family members feel more at eased seeing the photos and knowing that fellow soldiers did what they could to save their comrades lives. Hoyt ended the article with a quote from Bill Keller saying that there are different aspects of war and that death is a part of what needs to be told to the people.

    2. I think that this is an issue that can be seen from both sides. However, I believe that people should know what happens during a war. By keeping people ignorant about what goes on in a war, we are basically saying that there is a need to hide the truth. I think that war photos of death and carnage should become a part of history. It is important for people to know everything rather than be kept in the dark about certain things. People ought to be able to judge for themselves after being given evidence. The military should not be the one to decide whether or not people are allowed access to certain information. I believe that these war photos might be disturbing and bring about strong emotions, but I feel that they need to be used as documents to honor those who had died for a cause, not hidden and possibly be erased. That would be dishonoring the soldiers who either died or were injured.

    Homework Exercise 2F, 2H, and 2I

    Exercise 2F
An inference is a claim or idea that can be supported and convinced by using facts. An inference I have made is that Pelé is one of the greatest soccer players of all time. I say this because he is an overall great person who loved to play soccer and a pioneer in revolutionizing how soccer is played. His statistics are also amazing as he has the most number of goals scored and the only player to be a part of the three winning world cup teams. He was given trophies and medals in recognition for all that he accomplished. He changed the game by showing off his skills and teaching them to others who followed. The one I remember is how he was able to beat other soccer players in jumping up for a header and he explained that it was his training of jumping and timing. The timing was especially important so one would be able to jump up to the ball higher than another for a perfect header.

    Exercise 2H
    1. The reasons for the publication of the war pictures were to display the consequences of death and carnage from being at war. The pictures were supposed to bring and stir up heavy emotions, and they were indeed successful. The reason against the publication of pictures is because it was deemed insensitive to the suffering families. It also stirred up conflict from the military as several pictures of wounded soldiers were published without the consent of the soldiers. Another conflict is published dead soldiers without the consent of families. I believe the writer of the article is for the publication of the photos because he states he was upset that a photo about the horrors of war has not been published.

    2. Pictures about the death and carnage of the Iraq war are very disturbing and very powerful in terms of becoming anti-war. However disturbing they might be, I am for the publication of photos because people here have a right to know what is happening over there. We cannot see the stress and fear the soldiers are going through over in Iraq, and so it is through these pictures we can make that realization. We cannot rule out these pictures or ignore them because it is part of the sacrifice we make for going to war.

    Exercise 2I
    1. I thought the Pirelli advertisement was rather interesting as it states “Power is nothing without control” while showing a former soccer player, Ronaldo. Ranaldo is a Brazilian legend and was known for being a great striker in soccer. He made many amazing goals along with amazing foot work and ball handling control. Using Ranaldo as an example of “Power is nothing without control” is probably the best visual image in implying that Pirelli tires are the best you can have to have maxim control. These tires would have a target audience of any car owners and especially owners of sports cars which have a lot of horse power.

Guess advertisement shows two young adult who are intimate with each other while showing off the styles of clothing as “sexy” and “cool”. The advertisement is targeting the young sophisticated adult crowd who want to look good to find their mate. I like men’s Guess clothing and in this advertisement, the clothing on the man is clearly visible with all the details that make it appealing. The Guess clothing advertisement is not as effective to me as the Pirelli advertisement, but it would still make me want to buy the jacket being worn.

    EXERCISE 2F:

An inference is a conclusion has is reached from specific facts or knowledge that one realizes. A recent inference that I have made is that many people still drive and talk on the phone even though it is against the law. Everytime I am in the car I always see at least five people on the phone or texting before i get to wherever i am going. In my opinion i have concluded that i do not want to recieve a million dollar ticket nor get into a huge accident. So therefore I concluded that i will not tex or talk on the phone while driving.

Although, I do see why certain people may need to talk on the phone or tex in case of an emergency. If an accident happened or just something really big where you absolutley have to use your phone, then maybe. Still if it thaqt big of an emergency then you could always pull over. So, i guess i still with my conclusion.

    Exercise 2H:

In this article, The Painful Images of War, there are many reasons as to why readers are for and against the publication of pictures of dead or injured soldiers. One person said, "pictures are momuments" basically stated that even though you do not like what happened you can not forget that it did happen. These images might be a little disturbing but they are the truth and some people feel it is ok to express these truths with images. Many are against these images being published because they don't want to see what really happen. They just want their minds to know what happened and make its own conclusions. When seeing what really happened to some soldiers, especially if it is a loved one, it makes the situatioln far worse. One said that "people do not understand what battlefield is like" so by posting these images it just brings back memories that the surviving soldiers do not wish to see. I feel that Clark Hoyt is for the publication of these images. This article to me mainly leaned towards the publication rather then not publishing these images. The things he said and wrote make you feel like he is for it because a lot of arguments were supported to defend the support for the publishing of the images.

I saw the images on the website and at this time i feel that i am both for and against the publications of these images. I am for them because like people said in the article these images are the truth and i feel that people need to know the truth about what is really going on. When people decide to got off to war or whatever it may be I feel they do not know the real deal. They know what they might have read or seen, but they do not get to whitness first hand what really occurs out there in battle. In my opinion, one does not have to even look at the images when they are published it is a choice to see them. The reason I am against it is because some of these images are very disturbing. I feel that if you have a loved one that didnt survive and see their horrible image then i am against it. I could only imagine how hard it is to go through a death and then after have to see images of how exactly they died. That is the only reason i am against it.

Inference is the act of drawing a conclusion based on what an individual knows. A recent inference I made was that iphone4 is the best phone to own. It has many features and looks nice too. There are those occasional dropped calls but a lot of phones do that. But, in spite of that, iphone has all kinda of applications and games, from the old school chess to new games made just for iphone. Also has a calculator, oraganizer, organized calendar, note, alarm, youtube, maps and even a the weather for the week. That is pretty much what you need daily, no more or no less. The iphone comes up with convenient app all the time and all that has to be done with the phone is to be updated, and you'll automaticaly have it. The iphone keeps me organized and alerts me what I have to do an hour in advance and what I might have planned a while back and for got about it. The iphone has all these convenient features to help with your daily life. Thats why I believe iphone is the best phone around.

    Exercise 2H

    1) Looking at the article “The Painful Images of War,” the publication of the picture are the dead and wounded soldiers from war. They do this a reminder to all people that America is a great place and we are protected by the heros of this country, the military. The picture shows that, that happens during war and what soldiers have to face to protect their country.
    2) I believe the writer, Clark Hoyt, wrote this for people to realized that the military soldiers are serious and soldiers risk their lives to keep their country, their people safe.

    Exercise 2I

I found that Pirelli advertisement was very eye catching to me. He show a great soccer player, Ronaldo, on the mountain top replacing Jesus and saying "Power is nothing without control". I find that very powerful and deep. I think Pirelli is trying to say the power is like Jesus and controling is like Ranaldo, it take great controlling skill to play soccer.

    Exercise 2F

A recent inference I've made is that I should never try to trust anyone that works at a place that may mean they must be experienced in that sort of field of work. I tried to go to Pepboys earlier last week and buy some adhesive to stick on my car emblem onto my car, but from an employee's reference to buy 4 dollars worth of Gorilla Glue, I ended up having to pay an extra 50 dollars of labor to get the Gorilla Glue off of my car's paint because it didn't work with the emblem and the car at all. I was very frustrated with this problem because I trusted the employee with my money to fulfill my simple request on if it were to work with my car or not, yet my expectations of him failed me. It took me plenty more money to actually fix the mistake that I made in the first place that he led me to.

I feel that my anger was well-provoked, because I did ask him a very direct and very simple question that an employee would have been able to answer, because within 3 days of the glue being stuck on my car, I got second opinions that I should have used double-sided tape instead of the glue.

    Exercise 2H

    1. The reasons against the publication of the wounded or deceased soldiers is that the photographs depict memorabilia that might help others receive some sort of solace. Those dead soldiers might provoke the wrong idea to the general viewing public, and cause commotion and controversy within the American communities. They provide those of pain and loss of morale within what wars are being fought. It also provides some sort of mistrust in what America believes in, and the leadership of the armies that are going in to other territories to fight for what's right.

The photographs of the wounded, though, help honor their loved ones however, i.e. those who are waiting for their relatives/husbands/etc. to come home. They also serve as a great account of what is actually happening within the war, whereas the media might obstruct or omit some information.

Clark Hoyt believes that the photos should be shown to the general public so that the loved ones can see what's going on upon the other side of the picture. He also believes that this will spark the same controversy that I would assume would happen as well, because anything may happen with these photos that have no words to them supporting any claim.

    2. I strongly believe that it would be an issue to present these photographs to the viewing public, because nobody surely knows how the people might interpret the pictures of war. Even the title provokes some kind of anxiety and pain towards my emotions, and it seems impossible to avoid this kind of pain for anyone who would see these kind of photographs. I think in the end, the people should try to actually have a vote on if they can be able to or not, since it is a democracy. On the other hand, they could strictly center these groups of photographs to only the loved ones that really do care or wish to view them.
