Cyber-Assignment on Argumentation and other work

We will watch a film today: Argumentation (The Write Course). Write a short response to the video indicating what you learned about argument (100-250 words is fine).

Key words: Argument, premise (major & minor),
enthymeme, syllogism, logic, fallacy. . . .

WLTC: Review Exercises, Lexicon (Chapter 5). Next week, Chapter 6, Fallacious Arguments and the Classical Argument form.

Handouts: (1). Deductive vs. Inductive arguments.

Homework for the reading

Lit Circles continue Thursday. Look for 6 arguments: 3 inductive, 3 deductive to share. Post them here.

Rogerian Essay Grades
The plan is to get you grades on the essays to you by Friday, no later than Monday. If students do not write a passing essay (Grade C or better), he or she has to revise the essay.

Food for thought and Thursday's freewrite. Prepare by reading the chapter entitled: "The New Jim Crow." Read an article on Jim Crow before class, bring the reference electronically to class with notations.

Thursday's freewrite

In 3 paragraphs: Define "Jim Crow" per Michelle Alexander. Look at one other source to check or
verify Alexander's claim that the prison system is a reincarnation of this old system adopted by our judicial system to exclude entire populations of American people from its democracy and due process under the law.

Who or what is he? Use a citation in each paragraph: 1 free paraphrase, 1 shorter citation, 1 block quote

What I learned from the film
The film taught me about the three most commonly used way to create an argument. The first being take a stance on your argument and gather as much evidence as possible so that your conclusion is backed up by several sources, this kind of argument is very straightforward and is commonly used. The second kind of argument I learned about was predicting what the oppositions argument is going to be ahead of time and then explain why its wrong, this method makes your oppositions argument look inferior and it allows the audience to see why the oppositions argument is inferior. The third and final argument type I learned about was tearing your opposition’s argument piece by piece and eliminating all their points with evidence. I also learned that an arguments conclusion is supported by two premises a major premise and a minor premise, a major premise is a major example of your conclusion and a minor premise is a specific example of what you are talking about.

What I learned about the film was how to organize an argument. I learned that the most important thing to do is to know your audience. I sort of knew that already, but I did not pay much attention to it. I was able to see by the example that the movie provided that it is really important to know who you are writing to. Another important thing to do is anticipate the counter argument and be able to also incorporate it in your paper. One more thing that is really important is to have as much evidence as possible and be able to organize it, in order for it to make sense.

The film did a good job explaining the three things needed to write an argument. The first part of making an argument is to gather as much evidence by credited sources as possible to make your stand. The second one is to anticipate what the opposing argument is and give explaination to why the opposing ideas are wrong, and again giving evidence to that. The third piece is to eliminate all the opposing side's argument with evidence supported by a minor and major premise to make in the conclusion. I also learned about the importance of deductive and inductive reasoning/process which enables you to make an effective premise in your argument.

      Cyber Assignment -Film Response

The film was good because it had plenty of examples of how to format a paper for presenting an argument. I liked how they talked about gathering as much information as possible to make a valid point. Knowing the opposing side argument is beneficial because it allows you to present them and discuss them on your terms. Having evidence to prove your point is crucial to connecting with your audience.

I really enjoyed watching the film in class Tuesday called argumentation. It really explained in great detail how to format a paper for displaying an argument to someone. it does seem time consuming but they gathered alot of information to make a valid argument. When you see an opposing argument it gives you a chance to see two sides of a story and base your decision to satisfy more than just yourself.

While watching the video, I learned a lot of new things. I didn’t know that arguments have names, like minor and major premises. I learn that writing a good argument essay had to have evidence, main concern, viewpoints, know who are there audience, reasoning, facts, examples, and ideas. Also, a paper can’t be one’s view because they might not have the same ideas as you. It is for people who agree, disagree, and people who can’t make up their mind. I think this is a very useful tool, because it has everything you need in your argument and it makes it hard for anyone to argued back or disagree.

What I learned from the film is that using the perspectives of others is very important. Having an idea of what the audience will be like will also give a great idea of what to write in a certain paper. I learned about common ways to create an argument. Organization is very important when writing. It helps to create a counter argument. When considering the audience, it is very important to find a way for the audience to be on your side. One way is by explaining thoroughly why your certain objective of the paper is very important. In the film that man wanted to write about a why he needs a new van. This is a great example using the audience to persuade them to agree with your objective.

The film was very informative. It spoke on how to properly form and take a stance in an argument. The most valuable thing that I took from the film was the definitions. Terms like premise and logic are very valuable to know regarding forming an argument. Your premise is one or two opposing view points. A fallocy is a misleading or unsecored argument. Being awawre of such terms will help me to avoid them when forming my arguments
